My mother in law was visiting for the last two weeks and went back to Serbia on Saturday by bus (yeah, it's a long story, she's affraid of flying etc). At the border of Austria and Hungary it turns out there was a woman without a passport.
Now, for all those spoiled by ability to travel around anywhere with almost any kind of document, here in Europe if you're from a small country like Serbia you will be checked and double-checked several times while crossing borders. Not having a passport means you are stuck. This is not negotiable. Even if you had passport but no visa, you are stuck. This woman didn't have anything.
What's so strange about it? She did not accidentally forget to bring her passport, she knew what she was doing when she started the trip. She was actually very mad that she is not allowed to carry on, cursing and swearing. As far as she is concerned “she has important urgent business to attend”. Well, in that case, of course madam, please proceed :)
