After all, Whidbey is coming out next year, and Longorn... well, nobody knows for sure. Besides, looks like we're going to build for the Longhorn using Whidbey - I don't see any other version of Visual Studio announced before the launch of Longhorn.

Anyway, I think Microsoft is underhyping Whidbey. It is mostly all I hoped it to be and more. It brings much needed functionality on so many levels - good XML editor, XSLT debugger, .NET class visualizer (not full UML editor, but then again I am not that fond of UML anyway), refactoring support (again for .NET), even better standard conformance (C++), profile guided optimizations (C++), much improved .NET Compact framework, several new emulators (.NET CF) etc. These are all just at the top of my head, there is so much more, and after a long time I am really excited about a software product.

I have also decided to install Whidbey (community preview) into VMWare and not Virtual PC 2004. The difference in speed is enourmous, and lately VMWare networking has improved enough to be as usable as Virtual PC's. Recent drop in price of VMWare does not hurt, either - most of the people I know had only price between them and their copy.
